Lothlorien Cooperative HouseLothlorien is the greatest house of all MCC houses. We are a community of appox. 36 people (both students, workers & others), along with 6 cats (neither students nor workers) who share a large yellow castle on the shore of Lake Mendota. Since our founding in 1973, Lothlorien Co-op has striven to provide a welcoming & supportive atmosphere for people of all ages, sexes, races and sexual orientations. Many of our members are politically active in queer rights, labor rights, environmental & feminist movements, & our home is an open resource to activist groups like: Food Not Bombs, Stop the War, Radical Cheerleaders, & the Madison Art Collective. We often host benefit concerts, fiestas, coffeehouses, & other events providing the city of Madison w/ good times. Based in egalitarian ideals, house decisions are made through Formal Consensus at weekly Elven Council meetings. House Features & Fun Facts: Lothlorien is a historic structure built in 1915 --one of the first 2 buildings on our stretch of Lake Mendota. In its 90+ year history, Loth has been a fraternity, a women's dormitory, an army barracks, & now our dear Loth co-op. We also have a large passive solar water heating system. Indoors: Loth has a huge living room that is 860 sq. feet, library with 2,800 plus books, hard wood floors, 5-story spiral staircase, fireplaces distributed throughout the house, multiple rooftop decks, a grand piano. 3 public computers, weight bench, 2 washers and dryers, wireless internet access and DSL in your room, free long distance phone calls in the continental USA. All but one of our 31 bedrooms are singles, however, doubling in rooms is welcome for an additional $50/mo (divided among the two tenants). Outdoors: Our backyard has a stunning, hand-built terraced garden system; outdoor seating for lake-view meals; a lakeshore fire pit; a dock; & two canoes. Location: We have a great location on Lake Mendota within close walking distance of the Capitol, UW-Madison and MATC campuses, and bus lines. FOOD: We cook vegetarian meals with a vegan option nightly. Nearly all food at Loth is organic with most produce locally grown! Interested in eating both politcally & health consciously, but already have other housing plans? You can still food membership at Loth for $90/mo. Revel in endless organic food, delicious meals and exciting company. Inquire at dinners. Visitors are welcome to join us for community meals: Sunday-Friday at 6 pm. Advance arrangements aren't necessary, but always are appreciated.
