Madison Community Cooperative

housing for people, not profit

Madison Community Cooperative reaffirms its support and commitment to the rights and welfare of Black people, to the idea that Black lives matter, and to the Black Lives Matter movement. We raise our voice in chorus with the many other voices saying this same thing: Black lives matter. This statement needs to be made now, and in the future, as long as it takes until the reality of the world reflects its underlying truth. We demand an end to police violence, police harassment, and the incarceration of Black and Indigenous people in Madison and beyond.

We share in the sorrow and mourn the loss of so many Black, Indigenous, and marginalized people who have died at the hands of police, ICE, and others who have been placed in authority by a society which does not value Black lives, and does not behave as if Black lives matter. We share the anger, the outrage, at these injustices. We reaffirm our commitment to equality, justice, and freedom from oppression, to standing in solidarity with communities who face oppression, exclusion, and marginalization.

MCC, as a predominantly white housing organization, recognizes that we have perpetuated some of the evils of white supremacy in housing through our structure and action. We both recognize this, and affirm our commitment to make changes in our organization to uplift the voices of Black members in decision making, to make our organization more accessible to Black members and applicants, to address their needs as stated by them, and to take direction from and provide support to Black-led organizations in the Madison Area. We as housing providers have a responsibility to undo the harm caused by the US housing system to the black population.

We take this opportunity to say the names of some of the people whose lives were ended by state-sanctioned violence:
